Every week, I get tons of WhatsApp messages from international buyers asking the same questions: "How do your road-rail excavators actually move on the tracks?" or "I saw a cheap machine that just presses its rubber tires onto the rails. Why does JG use hydraulic motors on the steel wheels instead?"
 
Today, let’s skip the boring textbook jargon. I’m going to give you the honest, real-world breakdown of how these dual-purpose machines work, and why your choice of drive system can make or break your railway project.
 

The Two Main Players: Friction Drive vs. Hydraulic Drive

 
Once a road-rail vehicle hops onto the train tracks, it needs a way to propel itself. In the industry, manufacturers usually choose one of two paths:
 
  1. Friction Drive (The Budget-Friendly Option)
 
This setup is pretty simple. The steel wheels are just there to act as guides so the machine doesn't derail. To actually move, the machine relies on its original rubber tires pressing directly onto the steel rail (or onto a drum system). The friction between the spinning rubber and the steel rail pushes the machine forward.
 
The Honest Truth: It’s cheaper to build, which means a lower price tag upfront. But here is the catch—if it rains, snows, or if there is a tiny bit of grease on the tracks, those tires will spin out and slide like crazy. Braking becomes a nightmare, and you will burn through expensive rubber tires incredibly fast.
